Different Types Of Dog & Puppy Training
If you are having puppy problems or difficulty with your older dog, you may be considering dog training to achieve a well-behaved pet. Training courses and programs are available at local pet stores as well as online to choose from. But before you start any training, it’s important to know which level and type of class you should chose for your dog. There are different types of training and different “grades” or levels as well based on where your dog is at and what you expect for results.Dog Training Levels
- Puppies – Most classes are structured with a puppy class separate from the other curriculum. Puppies need specific instruction and care so if you have a new dog, it’s advisable to start them in the puppy class before moving on to the next level. When you start puppy training, you and your pet will bond while training with basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “come.” Puppy classes are a great way to start socializing your puppy with others dogs as well. These classes are generally recommended for puppies up to 5 months old and a great start to general obedience.
- Intermediate – After the puppy or beginner class, your dog is likely ready to move on to the intermediate level. This class usually reviews the basic commands and teaches additional cues such as heel, stand, and stay (from a distance). Intermediate classes generally also cover training despite distractions, which is important for dogs since this most accurately mimics real life situations.
- Advanced – Once your dog has the basics down and is generally well-behaved and socialized, they may be ready for an advanced class. This level helps increase the reliability of your dog, even amongst distractions. Advanced dog training classes also usually cover proper leash walking and how to sit politely while someone is petting them as well as other different types of dog training.
Other courses may include clicker or treat training (using a clicker or treat as positive reinforcement). Specialty training programs are also available if you plan to work, show, or compete your dog. These special training classes may include: agility, assistance dogs, herding, protection/security, problem solving, search and rescue, as well as additional service dog, work dog, and competitive dog training programs.
When considering a dog training program for your puppy or older dog, finding the type and level of dog training that best suits your dog is important. A class that is too basic may be nothing more than review for your dog. Likewise, a class that is too advanced may be overwhelming for your dog and you as well.
